Last Friday night a couple of friends and I were hanging out in Kitty and decided to stop by Nicky's on Dureylane to enjoy a few ice cold Banks beer before heading home.
Upon ordering we were told they were out of Banks beer, this was very disappointing but our disappointment quickly turned into curiosity when we were told Parbo beer was in generous supply. We accepted the alternative.
For those who are unfamiliar with Parbo beer, Parbo beer is a product of Suriname and while many Surinamese products are imported into Guyana, Parbo beer has never been one. Ok, it has been but scarcely and only in Berbice, the county that is closest to Suriname and as a result the one that enjoys the most trade with our Dutch speaking neighbor.
I had tried Parbo beer once before while on a trip to Paramaribo (capital of Suriname) back in 2002 but this was too long ago to remember what it tasted like so I was about to taste it again for the first time.
To describe the taste I think my buddy Renick said it best “this is the closest beer I have ever taste to Banks†and I agree however the taste, well the after taste that is was certainly a mystery since the beer didn't have one, that right you read correctly it didn't have one.
Some may say “big deal†but for someone like myself who has drank pretty much everything I could get my hands on containing alcohol over the past decade and a half a beer with no aftertaste couldn't be anything less than a mystery.
I'd like others to weigh in on this and it shouldn't be much trouble finding Parbo because we noticed on the label it said the beer was being legally imported by Caribbean International Distributors Inc., Mac Doom, East Bank Demerara.
So grab a cold one and get back to me about the taste.
